Five Easy Walks
A List Of Some Easy Walks In Anchorage

Refreshing Oceanside Walk There are two good access points to the Coastal Trail in downtown. One is off of 2nd Avenue and the other is from Elderberry Park, at the ocean end of 5th Avenue. This is an easy place to walk on a paved trail after a day in the car or bus. In the evening, you can take scenic pictures here of Sleeping Lady Mountain, across Cook Inlet, and the Port of Anchorage. It’s a short walk to scenic Westchester Lagoon on 15th and U Street.

Remembering The Great Alaska Earthquake In 1964, on March 27th, the earth shook in Alaska. A 9.2 magnitude quake, the second largest ever recorded in the entire world, devastated parts of Anchorage. At what is now Earthquake Park, you can see signs of the great quake.

Interesting And Colorful Walk You can drive to the Botanical Garden on your way to or from the Alaska Native Heritage Center. The Botanical Garden is on the south side of Tudor Road, at the stop light on Campbell Airstrip Road. Park your car at the Benny Benson School. The garden is open from 9 am to 9 pm and has a mile long nature trail as well as special gardens. If you love flowers, this is the place for you. (Aquilegia-Remembrance, Photo Barbara Miller)

Long Days and Great Trails Slideshow
During the middle of summer, the sun doesn't set until well after 10 pm. This makes for a long, pleasant day. Many Alaskans enjoy walking on the city trails well into the evening, watching the birds on the lakes and in Cook Inlet. While you're visiting Anchorage, take an evening to enjoy the very Alaskan experience of the "midnight sun."
